ABOUT THE USO
The USO is doing more then ever to support the troops.
There are more than 135 USO centers around the world that provide a home away from home for our troops. The USO is not a government agency. It's a non-profit, non-partisan, non-political organization that depends on the generosity of the American people.
The USO was established back in 1941 by FDR as it became clear we were heading into WWII. Several organizations were rallying to serve the troops. He united those service organizations into one non-profit organization to provide the emotional support the troops would need, a bridge back home. Today, the USO is still there to lift the spirits of the troops, and it will continue to be there for them, until every one comes home.
Many people think of the USO as the provider of great entertainment for troops. The USO continues to bring excellence in entertainment to troops around the world, with everything from multi-act extravaganzas in Germany to quiet handshake tours in Iraq. Each year the USO puts on hundreds of shows all over the world to thousands of troops.
But entertainment is only about 20% of what the USO does. The other 80% is made up of hundreds of little things done by those who work in USO centers. They provide everything from a listening ear, to Internet access, movies, food, a playroom for the kids or a place to sleep in an airport knowing that someone will wake them in time for their plane. And for the troops deployed far from a USO center, the USO can still reach them with supplies and services that assure the troops they are not forgotten.
The USO welcomes nearly seven million visits a year by the troops and their families. How is that possible? It's the hundreds of thousands of hours donated by USO volunteers. Clearly, the USO is powered by passion.
Financially, it's powered by donations. One of the great misconceptions is the assumption that the USO is funded by the government. It is not. The USO depends upon the generosity of the American people.
